Nairobi: Traders and residents of Nandi towns and urban centres have been advised to observe sanitation and use designated garbage collection points to dispose of wastes. Leading a clean-up exercise in Kapsabet town today, Nandi County Executive Committee Member in Charge of Lands and Environment, Hillary Serem, asked residents to dispose of wastes appropriately and ensure they use garbage bins provided by the government in management of waste.
According to Kenya News Agency, Serem said the Department of Environment is working closely with different partners to ensure Nandi County towns and urban centres are kept clean with the help of residents. He said extreme weather caused by the effects of climate change calls for everyone’s responsibility to ensure the environment is clean and restored to its initial position. Serem emphasized that living in a clean environment requires everyone’s responsibility without coercion from the government.
The team from the National Government, led by Deputy County Commissioner Lumumba Mugere, took part in the clean-up exercise in Kapsabet town. The cleaning team participated in opening up blocked drainage systems within Kapsabet town. Mugere hailed the cooperation between the National and County Government during the clean-up exercise, noting that the tree planting to mark National Mazingira Day has been supported by the two levels of government. He also called on the residents of towns and urban centres in Nandi County to use the facilities provided by the municipalities as a strategy for maintaining cleanliness.
Nandi County Government Public Health Officer, John Kibet, asked Nandi residents to observe the highest level of cleanliness to prevent communicable diseases like cholera. He stated that the public should ensure they live in hygienic surroundings all the time to curb over 80 percent of diseases caused by unsafe environments.
The clean-up exercises, which took place in Kapsabet, Mosoriot, Kaptumo, Cheptiret, and Nandi Hills towns, were build-up activities in preparation to mark Mazingira Day through planting trees in different places across the county. Kiptakei CBO, Red Cross, and the youth representatives took part in ensuring clean Nandi markets.
