Safaricom and Minet Insurance Advocate for Enhanced Mental Health in the Workplace

Nairobi – In a joint forum held by Safaricom plc and Minet Insurance, discussions were centered around improving the mental health and well-being of employees in various workplaces. The aim of the forum was to enhance not only the mental health of employees but also their overall productivity and output.

According to Kenya News Agency, a representative from Minet Kenya, the dynamic and high-pressure lifestyle of employees presents numerous challenges that significantly impact their mental health on a daily basis. She highlighted that such pressures often lead to stress-related illnesses and a rise in mental health disorders. Macharia shared concerning statistics indicating that one in four employees might appear fine but are silently struggling with mental health issues. She emphasized the importance of mental well-being as a process through which individuals can improve their health, well-being, and realize their full potential. Macharia pointed out that Kenya’s calm environment is conducive for organizations to address mental health issues, under the theme of unlocking minds and transforming futures.

Macharia urged organizations not only to explore the aspects of well-being within their structures but also to recognize the competitive advantage gained through a collective mental health journey. She underscored that employees are the most valuable assets of any organization, and their well-being is crucial. Employees, she noted, are not merely performers; they are architects shaping the future of organizations and the nation. “Employees hold the potential to positively or negatively transform organizations and unlock possibilities that set them apart in the business world,” Macharia reiterated.

In order to secure the nation’s future, she advised that everyone should collectively embark on the journey of mental well-being. A supported, understood, and empowered workforce is not just productive but also becomes a driving force in the competitive business landscape. Macharia stressed the need for organizations to implement mental health initiatives that foster well-being, thereby attracting talented individuals who seek environments that value their mental and emotional health. “Unlocking minds within organizations is not just about creating a healthy workplace but also about unleashing innovation, creativity, and resilience,” said Macharia.

Paul Kasimu, Chief Human Resources Officer at Safaricom plc, remarked on Safaricom’s progress over the years, emphasizing the importance of addressing one’s mental health before assisting others. He suggested that organizations establish clinics and wellness check centers to encourage employees to speak out and promote mental well-being.
