KAMPALA, Uganda- The Ugandan military, on Friday, said, one of its soldiers was killed and another seriously injured, by unknown gunmen, on a common border lake with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Brig. Richard Karemire, Uganda’s military spokesperson, said that, a group of unidentified armed men hurled a grenade at the troops, who were on routine patrol off Rwenshama fishing village, on Lake Edward, on Thursday.
“It is confirmed that one boat on routine patrol was attacked, by unknown gunmen using a grenade. One UPDF (Uganda People’s Defence Forces) was killed, and another got injured,” said Karemire.
“Patrols have now been stepped up as investigations to identify the perpetrators continue,” he said.
The attack comes barely two months after a group of six Ugandan fishermen were captured, by suspected Congolese Mai-Mai militia, at the same common border lake.
Ugandan security agencies, in response, arrested 26 Congolese fishermen, suspected of being allies of the militia group that captured the fishermen.
