A delegation of German parliamentarians and members of the friendship group of the German Parliament for African States led by Dr Karamba Diaby, visited the fruit terminal of Abidjan Plateau, after a visit to a banana plantation to take stock of the dessert banana industry in Côte d’Ivoire.
As part of this visit, three study themes were discussed. These are commercial, social and environmental issues. This discovery visit is on the initiative of the Pan-African Association of producers and exporters of African fruits called ”Afruibana”, reports an information note sent to the AIP.
“We are here mainly because everything that is in Côte d’Ivoire, in terms of agriculture, the export of products, whether bananas, the coffee-cocoa pair and others, interests us. Because, as we know, this sector creates jobs which are jobs for the future and which are based on the export of the products I mentioned. The banana sector contributes to the economy but also to social cohesion, to youth employment,” said Dr. Karamba Diaby on June 29, 2023.
At the end of the visit, the members of the West Africa Parliamentary Group of the Bundestag appreciated the differentiation in terms of quality and social and environmental conditions of dessert banana production in Côte d’Ivoire.
“We were impressed with what we saw. (…) We are satisfied with the level of cooperation between Germany and Côte d’Ivoire. If we can contribute to developing this cooperation, we as parliamentarians will do what we can and that is why we are here,” said Dr Diaby.
The director of cabinet of the Ivorian Minister of Transport, Coné Dioman, for his part, revealed figures which show the overweight of the fruit sector in Côte d’Ivoire.
Sur ce quai, 500.000 tonnes de fruits transitent par an, neuf navires modernes réfrigérés pour la conservation et le transport, avec deux lignes maritimes Afrique-Europe-Méditerranée, également 156 escales par an à Abidjan. « Vous vous rendez compte que ce terminal est un joyau de la communauté portuaire que vous visitez aujourd’hui qui est un bout de chaîne de toute le filière fruitière », a soutenu le collaborateur du ministre Amadou Koné.
Quant au président d’Afruibana, Owona Kono Joseph, il fait savoir que l’industrie de la banane est un meilleur exemple de la coopération Nord-Sud.
La filière banane dessert ivoirienne, leader en Afrique, est une locomotive des filières horticoles du pays. Générant plus de 13 000 emplois directs, la filière offre près de 25 000 emplois indirects et ses exploitations agricoles induisent la création d’infrastructures essentielles telles que des routes, des écoles, des centres de soin…
La Côte d’Ivoire produit 400 000 tonnes de banane dessert par an et en exporte 320 000 tonnes vers l’Union Européenne (UE). Toutefois, ce secteur fait face à une concurrence asymétrique des producteurs latino-américains qui exportent 15 millions de tonnes, dont 4,6 vers l’UE, soit 14 fois les volumes ivoiriens. Face à l’hégémonie latino-américaine, depuis six ans, les producteurs africains se sont réunis au sein de l’association Afruibana.
