SOUTH AFRICA NAMES LESETJA MOTHIBA ACTING NATIONAL POLICE COMMISSIOER

CAPE TOWN, South African Police Minister Fikile Mbalula says Lieutenant-General Lesetja Mothiba has been appointed the acting National Police Commissioner with effect from Thursday, replacing Lt-Gen Khomotso Phahlane whose acting tenure ended the same day.

Mbalula, who made the announcement at a media briefing in Parliament here Thursday, said the permanent National Police Commissioner, General Riya Phiyega, continued to be suspended.

Mbalula added that apart from no longer being the acting national commissioner, Phahlane had also been suspended in his permanent position in the South African Police Service (SAPS).

“Lt-Gen Phahlane is also suspended from his position as divisional commissioner with immediate effect. The government has committed itself to being pro-active in matters of corruption and defence of our Constitution, the independence of IPID (the Independent Police Investigative Directorate), the Judiciary and Chapter 9 institutions.”

Lt-Gen Mothiba was the SAPS Divisional Head of the Management Intervention Unit.
